Who Likes Apple Pie?
~ Written by Tabby McMonagle
Grammie was an excellent pie maker. She was most known for her apple pie. We all drooled in anticipation for that first bite. One day, however, her pie didn’t live up to its reputation. It turned out that instead of cinnamon, she had used chili powder. Everyone was disappointed that day.
Our hearts are much like Grammie’s pie. With wrong ingredients, it’s a disaster for all. Scriptures tell us God is concerned with what is in our hearts, not just our actions. His examination is over the reason for what we do and from what root it comes. If our motives are pride and selfish ambition, we are like an apple pie made with chili powder.
Jesus’ life is the perfect example of how to live our lives. He teaches us the recipe for a right heart. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus lists ingredients like poor in spirit, mercy, thirsting for righteousness, humility, meekness, and peacemaking.
A few years ago, God showed me my heart was filled with the wrong ingredients. It was like a mirror being held up to my face. I had a choice to allow God to change me or to stay the same. After throwing a huge fit, I agreed for God to start his work in me. Although I have a long way to go, I am beginning to see the difference in my heart.
The world’s ways feel natural. God’s ways feel uncomfortable until we recognize that they are the true ingredients needed for a blessed heart. Will you join me and let God be in charge of the ingredients in your heart?
